Description:
A beautifully detailed brass sculpture of Uma–Maheshvar, Shiva and Parvati seated together upon Nandi, the sacred bull and vahana of Shiva.
The Uma–Maheshvar form has a long history in Indian sculpture, appearing across different periods and regions in stone, bronze and other traditional media. A historical example from the collection of the Archaeological Survey of India, Goa, preserved through the Museums of India, depicts Uma and Maheshvar seated together upon Nandi and is dated to the 10th century CE. The sculpture is identified with the Kadamba/Yadava period.
Our sculpture is a much later expression of this enduring tradition, crafted in brass and carrying the distinctive character of South Indian metalwork. The finely worked crowns, jewellery, garments and ornamental details give both figures a wonderful sense of richness, while the expressive faces bring a quiet warmth to the composition.
Around 30+ years old, the sculpture has acquired the character of age through its surface, natural wear and variations in colour. These small changes are part of what makes an old object feel lived with rather than newly made.
It is a piece that can find its place easily in a home, whether displayed as part of a collection or simply allowed to stand on its own. The longer you look, the more details begin to reveal themselves.
