Description:
This is an beautiful oleograph print of Thirupati Venkateswarar from the early 1900s painted by an Indian artist K.S. Siddalingaswamy (1885–1952) from Mysore.
About the Artist:
K.S. Siddalingaswamy (1885–1952) was a talented artist, sculptor, architect, writer, and spiritual teacher from Mysore. Born in Kollegal, he became the royal adviser and guru to the kings of Mysore—Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. He was deeply spiritual and followed the Shaiva tradition, which influenced his art and teachings.
His paintings, known for following traditional Hindu temple styles, are still seen in the Durbar Hall of Mysore Palace. Siddalingaswamy also worked with the famous Ravi Varma Press, where his painting Sri Prasanna Shankara (1932) was printed. While Ravi Varma’s art had a modern touch, Siddalingaswamy’s works stayed true to ancient scriptures and temple traditions.
In 1949, he started a sculpture school in Mysore to train artists in temple art. He also wrote books on sculpture and philosophy, and taught many students, including sculptor L. Shivalingappa.
Siddalingaswamy passed away in 1952, but his deep knowledge and beautiful works continue to inspire artists and spiritual seekers even today.
What is lithography and Oleography?
The Greek word litho means ‘stone’ and graphein means ‘to write’ so Lithography can be defined as ‘stone printing’. The printing plate originally used were porous stones. The priting portion of the stone plate was treated to absorb ink and the nonprinting area was treated to repel ink. Depending on the number of colours present, an oleograph could take months to produce by very skilled workers.
The Oleography process is a variation of lithography, but instead of using a single stone or plate, multiple stones/ plates are used—each carrying a different color. Unlike regular lithographs, oleographs have multiple ink layers, giving them depth and richness. Oleographs often resemble oil paintings due to their glossy finish and thick ink application.
