Two little sisters. One fleeting moment of childhood. And a portrait that travelled through painting, print and sculpture.

Emily Calmady and her younger sister Laura Anne were painted by the celebrated British portrait artist Sir Thomas Lawrence in 1823, when they were around five and three years old. Their mother introduced them to Lawrence through the printmaker Frederick Christian Lewis, and the artist was immediately charmed by the children.

The resulting portrait, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1824, captures the sisters in a wonderfully intimate moment leaning towards one another, their faces close, looking more like children caught in play than formal portrait sitters.

But the image did not remain a painting.

It was reproduced through prints and travelled beyond Britain before being translated into bronze by Edward William Wyon. His relief, known as The Calmady Children or Children at Play, gives us another way of seeing the same childhood moment.

What makes this story fascinating is the journey of one image through different hands, artists and mediums from Lawrence’s paintbrush to the printmaker’s plate and finally into bronze.

The original portrait is now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

A childhood moment, preserved in more than one medium.
