Description:

Here we have an off-set print from 1950s of Sri Vadivel Murugan by the famous South indian artist Kovilpatti Kondiah Raju..

The print has been beautifully embellished by its owner using different  fabrics, Zardosi and sequins to enhance the beauty of Murugan. It may have some signs of fading due to its age which adds to it's beauty.

About the Artist:

Kovilpatti Kondiah Raju (1898-1976) was born in Mylapore, Chennai to a family of traditional artisans. His father C. Kuppaswami Raju was a Siddha medical practitioner. Before his death in 1912, Kuppaswami made arrangements for the young Kondiah Raju to learn the traditional skill of the Raju community - Religious painting.

His depictions were mostly influenced not only by Ravi Varma’s compositions of the Gods and Goddesses but also by the popular art of Tanjore paintings in which his community, the Rajus of Tanjore and Tiruchi had distinguished themselves from the Nayakar period i.e. from 16th Century.

So pervasive are his prints that many South Indians would visualise and recognise not only the many deities, but also leaders of the Indian freedom movement, contemporary political leaders and other important personalities only as depicted in his prints. His prints have been collected internationally and are even archived in the Victoria and Albert Museum, H. Daniel Smith Poster Archive, Syracuse University library.

His latter years were spent in Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu where he establisted the "Devi Art Studio". When Kondiah Raju died on 27 July 1976, his pupils spoke of him with awe, calling him an 'artist-saint'. Though he had earned a fortune through his artistic commissions, he never married, distributed his wealth to others, and lived a simple life like a saint with one shirt, one veshti and one towel. In 1971, he would even turn down an offer to travel to Chennai to receive a Government award recognising his contributions to art.
