Description:
This vibrant oleograph print from the 1920s, produced by the Ravi Varma Press, captures one of the most cherished moments in Indian mythology, the Pattabhishekam (coronation) of Lord Rama.
The artist has depicted a beautiful scene where Rama sits on a grand throne, serene and radiant, with Sita by his side and Lakshmana and other’s standing close in devotion. Hanuman holds his feet in humble service as gods, sages, and vanaras gather in joyous celebration.
Printed in the early to mid-20th century in Ravi Varma Press, this unsigned oleograph reflects the devotional art style inspired by Raja Ravi Varma’s school. The composition’s delicate shading, expressive figures, and intricate ornamentation evoke the emotional depth and grandeur typical of that golden era of Indian printmaking.
Even after a century, the Ram Pattabhishekam remains a beloved subject among collectors and art lovers alike.
What is lithography and Oleography print?
The Greek word litho means ‘stone’ and graphein means ‘to write’ so Lithography can be defined as ‘stone printing’. The printing plate originally used were porous stones. The priting portion of the stone plate was treated to absorb ink and the nonprinting area was treated to repel ink. Depending on the number of colours present, an oleograph could take months to produce by very skilled workers.
The oleography process is a variation of lithography, but instead of using a single stone or plate, multiple stones or plates are used, each carrying a different color. Lithograph and oleograph prints also differ in appearance. Oleograph prints are slightly thicker than lithographs, with a more textured, matte finish, and they have the look of an oil painting.
And on the other hand, lithograph prints are very thin, to be more precise they are paper thin, flat, smooth and even color distribution.
