Description:

This is an oleograph print from 1928  of Shree Ram Panchayatan by Vasudeo Hiralal Pandya an Indian painter.

About the Artist:

Vasudeo Pandya  was born in the year 1896 in Gujarat. After his schooling he became a teacher in his village school.  He later moved to Bombay where he lived in a chawl in the district of Tardeo. He met an European man,  who was impressed with Pandya’s handwriting & he recruited Pandya  as a document copier in his company. At the European firm, the goods often traded came wrapped in prints of the Renaissance artists. These prints fascinated Pandya & he began to adopt the perspective & colour inspirations from these paintings. Pandya was doing drawing as a hobby. He was an Amateur painter & his first work was in oil, a standing portrait of the 4 handed Hindu deity.

Later he met a Parsi gentleman Mr. Wadia Who fell in love with his work & encouraged his hobby. He also convinced him to travel to Germany & have his paintings printed just like the artists like Raja Ravi Varma. During that period Ravi Varma had already travelled to Germany to print lithographs.

The printing press was in Heidelberg, Germany. 18-20 paintings were printed as Oleographs. After 1939 this press was bombarded by the Nazis in World War II.

All his painting were lost forever. He by then had sold 800,000 Vishnus, about 200,000 editions of the other prints.

His business collapsed over night. He moved to Ahmedabad with his family, sold his big palace house & went on to live in a rental house. Slowly he started painting again. Later in life,  he was commissioned by the Swami Narayan Temples around the world to come paint murals, specially South Africa & England.

What is Oleography?:
The Greek word litho means 'stone' and graphein means 'to write' so Lithography can be defined as 'stone printing'. The printing plate originally used were porous stones. The priting portion of the stone plate was treated to absorb ink and the nonprinting area was treated to repel ink. Depending on the number of colours present, an oleograph could take months to produce by very skilled workers.
