Here we have a Shiva Mukhalingam made of brass from coastal Karnataka.

The historical origins of Mukhalingas date back to 2 BCE. This distinctive style of Mukhalingam finds its roots in ancient Southeast Asian countries such as Cambodia, Vietnam, and India. In India, particularly in Karnataka, Mukhalingam is quite prevalent.

In ancient times, sculpted faces adorned Shiva Lingams. Mukhalingas typically feature one, four, or five faces. A single-faced Mukhalinga is known as an "eka-mukhalinga." Mukhalingas with four faces are also believed to possess an invisible fifth face at the top of the Linga. The four- and five-faced Mukhalingas represent the five aspects of Shiva, which correspond to the classical elements and cardinal directions

A rock cut shiva linga may be converted into a mukhalinga by covering with a kavacha ("armour"), a metal (generally gold) covering carved in the shape of the head of Shiva. In ancient times Shiva Lingams were  covered using Mukhalingams which had a hollow or cylindrical shape at the bottom which goes over the top of the Shiva Linga to cover the lInga from people looking at Linga. The metal Mukhalingam displays the third eye of Shiva on the forehead, the crescent moon over his head and a crown.
