Description:

This is an oleograph print of “Shakuntala Janam” printed in Ravi Varma press,  Malavli in 1898. This particular painting “Shakuntala Janam” holds a special place in the history amongst all the other Ravi Varma paintings.

The F. A. L. Press Bombay (Ravi Varma Fine Art Lithographic Press) was the first ever printing press of Ravi Varma which was established in the year 1894 in Girgaum, Bombay (now Girgaaon , Mumbai). Ravi Varma’s paintings Sakoontala, Lakshmi, Saraswati were the first 3 paintings which were chosen by Ravi Varma to print in his newly opened press F. A. L. press  in 1894. It was initially named “Sakoontala” and later the name was changed to “Shakuntala Janam”. So among all the other paintings of Ravi varma, “Shakuntala Janam” holds a special place in the history.

P. S. The reason why Ravi Varma had to shut down his first press F.A. L., Bombay is,  in 1896 a bubonic plague broke out in Bombay and Ravi Varma had to close down his F.A.L press and move the press to the outskirts of Bombay, to Ghatkopar in the year c. 1896-1897.

What is Oleography?:
The Greek word litho means 'stone' and graphein means 'to write' so Lithography can be defined as 'stone printing'. The printing plate originally used were porous stones. The priting portion of the stone plate was treated to absorb ink and the nonprinting area was treated to repel ink. Depending on the number of colours present, an oleograph could take months to produce by very skilled workers.
