Description:
This is a late 1800s lithograph print of Goddess Saraswati by Raja Ravi Varma, one of India’s most celebrated artists, renowned for bringing mythological subjects from the Mahabharata and Ramayana into beautiful visual forms.
This print is particularly significant as it belongs to the early phase of the Ravi Varma Fine Art Lithographic Press (FAL Press), Bombay, established in 1894.
In the mid-1800s, lithography gained popularity worldwide for its ease and versatility compared to earlier techniques like engraving and etching. Initially late 1800s, Raja Ravi Varma and other Indian artists sent their paintings to Germany for printings because of their print quality.
History of Ravi Varma F.A.L. press;
With the support of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, Raja Ravi Varma established the Fine Art Lithographic Press in 1894 at Girgaum, Bombay. This Saraswati lithograph print featured here was produced at the F.A.L. Press between 1894–1896, during the early phase of Ravi Varma’s first press.
Later, Ravi Varma had to move the press from Girgaum to the outskirts of Bombay, Ghatkopar, due to the bubonic plague in 1896. As the situation continued, the press was moved from Ghatkopar to Malavli near Lonavala in 1898. Following a fire accident, the Malavli press was closed and shifted to Karla near Lonavala in 1899, and was eventually sold in 1903 to his German technician, Mr. Schleicher.
Prints from the F.A.L. Press are rare and highly sought after by collectors.
