Description:

Saint Rita of Cascia - The Mystical Crowning with Thorns

A serene devotional image of Saint Rita of Cascia, the Augustinian nun revered as the patron saint of impossible and desperate causes. Rita holds a crucifix close to her, her gaze lowered in contemplation, while an angel behind her prepares to place a crown of thorns upon her head.

The thorn wound visible on Rita’s forehead refers to the mystical wound she is traditionally said to have received after praying before an image of Christ’s Passion. The crucifix, crown of thorns and devotional book together evoke her profound meditation on Christ’s suffering.

Printed in Dresden around 1914 by Kunstanstalten A.G., this richly coloured chromolithograph belongs to the tradition of early twentieth-century European devotional prints, when advances in colour lithography allowed religious imagery to be reproduced with remarkable richness and distributed widely beyond churches and private collections. The press details at the bottom have been cut off by the previous owner, possibly during framing.
