Description:

Here we present a real antique, original Water Color painting of “Radha Krishna - Parinay (Sacred bond)” by Khubiram Gopilal from the early 1900s. Khubiram and Gopilal were prominent early 20th-century artists from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, home to the Shrinathji Temple, dedicated to Krishna in his child-god form.

Artist Khubiram, born 1891 A.D. was influenced by Academic Realism, a style focused on lifelike details, and drew inspiration from Raja Ravi Varma. Artist Gopilal on the other hand, a skilled portraitist, trained under his uncle, the official painter for Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur.

Together, they founded the Khubiram–Gopilal enterprise, specializing in pichhwai and manorath paintings. Their works were typically signed “Chitrakar Khubiram Gopilal”, often at the bottom right, as seen in this painting.

Their style blended realism with traditional Nathdwara aesthetics, creating masterpieces on handmade paper or canvas using watercolor or gouache. This stunning painting, Radha Krishna - Parinay (Sacred bond),” is one fine example of their watercolor technique on handmade paper.

Khubiram and Gopilal’s legacy endures, inspiring collectors and devotees alike. Their innovative fusion of temple art and realism made devotional paintings more accessible beyond the royal and priestly classes.

Many of their works, once sold as pilgrimage souvenirs, are now treasured collectibles, found in temples, private collections, and museums.
