Description:

A beautiful early chromolithograph print from 1878 printed in Chitrashala press, Pune.

About the famous Chitrashala printing press:
In 1878, Vishnushastri Chiplunkar established 2 printing presses in Pune in partnership with Balakrishna Pant Joshi & Shankar Tukaram Shahigram. Aryabhushan Press & Chitrashala Press.

The Aryabhushan Press was primarily for printing newspapers & books while Chitrashala Press for fine arts in the form of chromolithographs & postcards. Bal Gangagadhar Tilak’s newspapers The Kesari (Marathi) & the Maharaja (English) were initially printed at Aryabhushan Press.

Ravi Varma had his paintings printed in Chitrashala, Pune even before he started his own press in Karla Lonavala & Ghatkopar. Chitrashala press was an inspiration to Ravi Varma. It was not just for Ravi Varma but it was a boon for both Indian and non Indian artists of that time to get their work printed. Those days, Tanjore paintings were affordable only to the elite classes. Because it was very expensive due to the workmanship (gems & real gold work) it was not affordable for the general public. So presses like Chitrashala was a blessing to many. The chromolithographs printed in Chitrashala press was considered to be the oldest and hence very rare. They are highly in demand among the collectors of chromolithographs all over the world.

About the founder of Chitrashala press:
Vishnushastri Chiplunkar (1850–1882) was a Marathi writer. He worked as a government school teacher during the years 1872-1879. His political writings forced his transfer to Ratnagiri, soon after which he resigned & moved back to Pune. Vishnushastri Chiplunkar died in 1882, at the young age of 32. The Graphic in London, in their obituary for him, called him a “pioneer of progress”.
