 Description:

A beautifully detailed brass sculpture of Ganapati seated upon a peacock. We usually know Ganapati with his little mouse, Mushika, at his feet. But there is another, less familiar story in which Ganesha rides a magnificent peacock.

According to the legend, when Ganesha was born to Parvati, a divine peacock appeared before him in the forest and became his mount. Riding this beautiful bird, Ganesha went forth as Mayuresha to defeat the demon Sindhu and restore peace to the three worlds.

After his victory, Ganesha gave the peacock to his brother Skanda (Kartikeya/ Murugan), whose familiar companion it became. Yet the memory of Ganesha riding the peacock remained, especially in Maharashtra, where he is worshipped as Mayureshwar, the Lord of the Peacock.

At Morgaon, the heart of the Ashtavinayak tradition, Mayureshwar became one of Maharashtra’s most beloved forms of Ganesha. Even the name Morgaon carries the memory of the peacock.

This beautiful brass sculpture captures that lesser-known form of Ganapati, majestic, graceful and wonderfully unexpected. More than fifty years old, its brass has naturally darkened with time, developing a deep patina that brings out the intricate details of the deity and his magnificent mount.

Mayuresha is a beautiful piece to bring into a home, a sculpture with an unusual story, a strong presence, and the warmth of an object that has already lived a long life.
