Description:
This is a print of an iconic Raja Ravi Varma painting depicting the beautiful Manorama. A painting which has evoked a sense of sensuality along with peace for all these decades, brings back an image of an era through an open window.
Raja Ravi Varma is celebrated for his stunning depictions of Hindu mythological scenes, but the painting of Manorama is bit different. Rather than telling a mythological story, it explores the theme of feminine beauty and emotion. The name “Manorama” means “pleasing to the mind” or “beautiful,” indicating that the artwork captures the essence of calm, charm, and grace. This piece is part of a broader series where Varma portrayed a range of emotions and psychological states through his subjects. These prints are oleographs from the early 1900's and may have visual hints of ageing in the form of fading which adds character.
What is Oleography?:
Oleographs, also called chromolithographs, are multi-colour art prints, stemming from the process of lithography. Pioneered in the 1830s, the process of producing oleographs came into wide commercial use in the 1860s. Depending on the number of colours present, an oleograph could take months to produce by very skilled workers.
About the Ravi Varma Lithographic Press:
It was with the assistance and encouragement of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III that Raja Ravi Varma set up the Ravi Varma Lithographic Press in Mumbai in 1894. The press was later moved to Malavli near Lonavala then to Karla, Maharastra and finally sold in 1901 to his German technician Mr. Schleizer. However, the press was soon destroyed in a fire and was eventually closed down.
