Description:
This oleograph print from the 1920s–30s depicts Man-Har-Krishna by an unknown Indian artist. The printing details below the oleograph indicate that it was printed as Germany and published by Harnarayan & Sons, Jodhpur, India.
In the mid-1800s, oleograph/ lithograph printing gained popularity worldwide due to its ease and versatility compared to earlier techniques like engraving and etching. Renowned for its high-quality results, it became a favored method for producing books, catalogs, and posters.
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, prominent Indian artists like Raja Ravi Varma, Vasudeo H. Pandya, and others had their paintings printed as oleographs or lithographs at presses in Germany, prior to the establishment of lithographic presses such as the Chitrasala Press (est. 1878) and Ravi Varma Press (est. 1894) in India.
These German prints were highly regarded for their exceptional quality and became immensely popular in India. After 1939, the Heidelberg Press and others in Germany were destroyed during World War II, prompting Indian presses to produce oleographs matching German quality.
This oleograph is an example of such a print, combining German printing expertise with Indian artistry.
What is lithography/ Oleography?:
The Greek word litho means 'stone' and graphein means 'to write' so Lithography can be defined as 'stone printing'. The printing plate originally used were porous stones. The priting portion of the stone plate was treated to absorb ink and the nonprinting area was treated to repel ink. Depending on the number of colours present, an oleograph could take months to produce by very skilled workers.
