This beautiful painting of Goddess Lakshmi, seated gracefully on a lotus, is a fine example of the Mysore School of Painting, one of Karnataka’s most finest classical art traditions. Originating from the great Vijayanagara School, this style reached its peak under the royal patronage of the Wodeyars of Mysore between the 17th and 19th centuries.
Mysore paintings are known for their graceful lines, gentle colours, and serene expressions, often portraying deities in moments of divine calm. Artists traditionally used natural mineral and vegetable pigments and painted with squirrel-hair brushes for the finest details. Each painting could take weeks or months to complete, depending on the precision of its ornamentation and finishing. The gold in original Mysore paintings was hand-beaten 22-carat foil, but many 20th-century works replaced it with imitation gold for accessibility. Such as this particular piece, about 30 years old uses gold paint, capturing the same warm glow and intricacy of the classical method without real gold.
Today, these Mysore paintings hold a special place among collectors for their timeless charm. While antique pieces are treasured as collectibles, many contemporary Mysore-style works are also finding their way into modern homes and interiors, valued not just as art, but as symbols of grace, heritage, and quiet devotion.
