Krishna Shishtai

Description:

This is an oleograph print from 1906 of Krishna shishtai by Ravi Varma an Indian who achieved recognition for his depiction of scenes from the epics of the Mahabharata and Ramayana.

What is Oleography?
The Greek word litho means 'stone' and graphein means 'to write' so Lithography can be defined as 'stone printing'. The printing plate originally used were porous stones. The priting portion of the stone plate was treated to absorb ink and the nonprinting area was treated to repel ink. Depending on the number of colours present, an oleograph could take months to produce by very skilled workers.

Who is Raj’s Ravi Varma?
Raja Ravi Varma (29 April 1848–2 October 1906) was a celebrated Indian artist, famous for his realistic portrayal of Indian gods, goddesses and mythological characters. Raja Ravi Varma was the first to make prints (or lithographs) of his artworks affordable and easily available, bringing fine art to the masses.

There is a personal connection comes with the artist Ravi Varma with his Painting “Krishna Shishtai”.  He once had gifted a grand brocade fabric to his grand daughter, Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, the last queen of Kerala. Here is a picture of Sethu Lakshmi Bayi wearing a long brocade skirt (in pink) which was taken on her wedding day in 1906. This skirt was made from the same brocade fabric her Grand father Ravi Varma had gifted her.

 The highlight is,  this brocade fabric was originally a gift to Ravi Varma by Maharaja of Mysore (Jatayu Vadham was commissioned by the same Mysore Maharaja). The point is… Ravi Varma has used the same  brocade pattern to the costume of Krishna in his “Krishna Shishtai” painting. When we find such personal connections to the artist with the paintings, it adds more value to his creation!
