Patachitra, from the Sanskrit words “patta” (cloth or canvas) and “chitra” (picture or painting), is a traditional scroll painting art form that originated in Eastern India, primarily in Odisha and West Bengal. More than just art, Patachitra is a storytelling tradition where vivid imagery, music, and mythology come together to narrate tales from epics, folklore, and sacred texts.

In this particular Patachitra artwork, we see multiple panels depicting Radha and Krishna in various moods and moments. Each scene expresses their deep love, playful interactions, and divine connection. Krishna, with his flute and charm, is shown alongside Radha, his eternal beloved, who symbolizes pure devotion. These images beautifully capture the spiritual bond between love and the divine, a central theme in Indian art.

Techniques and Materials used in Patachitra;

Patachitra art form is known for their highly detailed with intricate floral borders, bold colors, and symmetrical compositions.  The  vibrant colours are traditionally handmade from natural sources;  white from conch shells, black from burnt coconut shells, red from vermilion, and yellow from turmeric, among others.

The base material for Patachitra is usually cloth, dried palm leaves (especially in Odisha), or paper. This particular piece from the Purathanam collection is made on cloth and the colors are natural colours derived from stones.

It is framed in a vintage wooden frame with a jute-finish mount, giving it a warm, earthy, and traditional appearance. This artwork is a wonderful example of how history, devotion, and beauty come together in a single frame.
