Kailash Pati Shankar by Narattam Narayan Nathdwara
Description:
Narottam Narayan Sharma was an Indian artist from Nathdwara born in 1896. He was very famous for his ‘Murli Manohar’ (Krishna) the most recognisable painting of Narottam Narayan and a best-selling image. Some of his paintings were popular throughout North India and were even more influential than the works of Raja Ravi Varma.
Artists of those days, like Ravi Varma, Vasudeo Pandya, and others, wished to make their paintings accessible to the masses, while the original artworks were affordable only for the elites.
To achieve this, they sent their paintings to be printed in Germany. That’s how the artist Narottam Narayan of Nathdwara might have sent his painting to Germany to be reproduced using a printing technique that was highly popular during the late 1800s.
As a result, oleograph and lithograph prints produced in Germany hold greater value compared to those printed later in India. Over a century later, this printing technique has become outdated making way for the new techniques, and so those litho and oleograph prints themselves have aged into valuable antique pieces.
This is one of the Chromolithograph prints printed in Germany of Kailash Pati Shankar by Narottam Narayan Nathdwara in 1920s.
Additional information about the artist work;
Several paintings of Narottam Narayan like Krishna, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Kailash Pati Shankar (Shiva) were published as posters by S. S. Brijbasi, a firm based in Karachi in pre-independence India (from 1918 until Partition), using Chromolithography and printed in Germany. (Source: Wikipedia)
