Description:
Here we have lovely miniature painting of Kalarathri Devi from the Bengal School of art painted by an Indian Artist Kalicharan in 1980s.
Kaalratri Devi also spelled Kalatathri is one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga worshipped during Navaratri, specifically on the seventh night worshipped for fearlessness and spiritual awakening. Her story and symbolism are deeply rooted in Shakta traditions and Tantric lore, where she represents the dark, fierce, and protective aspect of the divine feminine.
The Bengal School of Art began in the late 1800s and early 1900s as a way to bring back Indian art styles during British rule. At that time, Indian artists were being trained to paint like Europeans using oil paints, realistic portraits, and Western ideas. But artists like Abanindranath Tagore, with the help of E.B. Havell, wanted to return to Indian roots. They were inspired by old Indian art like the Ajanta cave paintings, Mughal miniatures, and even Japanese painting styles. This movement grew alongside the Swadeshi movement, which encouraged Indians to take pride in their own culture.
The Bengal School focused on themes from Indian stories like scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas, and the life of the Buddha. Even though later artists moved toward modern styles, the Bengal School played a big role in bringing back Indian identity through art. It reminded people of the beauty of Indian traditions and helped build a sense of pride. This miniature painting of Kalaratri Devi on horseback reflects that same spirit, full of strength, movement, and the power of Indian storytelling
