Back in 1639, Japan entered a period known as Sakoku, or the “closed country.” For over two centuries, Japan kept its doors shut to the outside world — not to stop trade, but to keep out the growing influence of foreign faiths that arrived with European ships. Only a few Dutch and Chinese traders were allowed through the port of Nagasaki. This long isolation preserved Japan’s traditions and stability until 1853, when American warships arrived and forced the country to reopen.

Once Japan opened up to the world again, its products began to travel far beyond its shores, even to colonial India. This vintage Jintan canvas is a perfect example of that exchange: printed in Hindi and Bengali, it brought a touch of Japanese branding into Indian shops.

Dating to the mid-1900s, this canvas ad was designed to catch the public eye — part street sign, part folk art. Born in Osaka in 1893, the Jintan brand’s long legacy in health and wellness gives this piece both beauty and authenticity.
