Description:

Here we have a pagoda -shaped ink pot made of brass. Both the ink pot and the lid are chained together.  The history of ink pots dates back thousands of years, originating from ancient civilizations that developed writing systems. In the early stages of writing, various materials such as shells, hollowed stones, and small clay containers were used to hold ink. However, the concept of dedicated ink pots specifically designed for writing purposes emerged later in history.

One of the earliest examples of ink pots can be traced to ancient Egypt, where scribes used small containers made of alabaster or stone to hold their ink. These ink pots often had narrow openings to prevent ink from drying out quickly.

As writing instruments and techniques evolved, so did ink pots. In medieval Europe, ink pots were typically made of ceramic or metal, such as bronze or brass. These ink pots were often elaborately decorated, reflecting the artistic styles of the time. Some featured intricate engravings, while others took the shape of animals, mythological creatures, or everyday objects.

During the Renaissance, ink pots became more refined and elegant. They were commonly made of glass, allowing scribes to see the ink level easily. With the advent of mass printing in the 19th century, ink pots transitioned into larger containers called inkwells. Inkwells were commonly made of glass, ceramic, or metal, and were used in conjunction with dip pens. These inkwells had wider openings to accommodate the larger nibs of dip pens and often featured built-in pen rests.

In the 20th century, the invention of fountain pens and later ballpoint pens led to a decline in the use of ink pots and inkwells. However, they remain treasured by calligraphy writers. Ink pots continue to be valued by collectors and enthusiasts for their historical significance and aesthetic appeal. Today, they are considered artifacts of a bygone era, offering glimpses into the rich history of writing and communication.
