Description:

Here is a fantastic and richly layered example of early Indian advertising art, blending devotional imagery, domestic scenes, and commercial branding for Asafoetida.

This 1937 oleograph calendar from Gopaljee & Co., Madras, is a gem of early Indian advertising, where art and commerce met on the same canvas. At the center is a serene image of a young woman playing the tanpura before a shrine of Lord Vishnu, the embodiment of wisdom, music, and learning.

Just like Ravi Varma, M. V. Dhurandhar’s paintings of Hindu deities, other artists paintings were also used in marketing  in the form of posters and calendars to promote their brands and products in the market.

Popular companies from both Indian and London  companies like sunlight soap company, Chika Ltd, Bombay, The British Alizarine co. ltd. a London Travel company,  Ltd. etc are good examples of such posters Which are still high in demand as they have become antique after 100 years, much like this print.

What is lithography and Oleography?

The Greek word litho means ‘stone’ and graphein means ‘to write’ so Lithography can be defined as ‘stone printing’. The printing plate originally used were porous stones. The priting portion of the stone plate was treated to absorb ink and the nonprinting area was treated to repel ink. Depending on the number of colours present, an oleograph could take months to produce by very skilled workers.

The Oleography process is a variation of lithography, but instead of using a single stone or plate, multiple stones/ plates are used—each carrying a different color. Unlike regular lithographs, oleographs have multiple ink layers, giving them depth and richness. Oleographs often resemble oil paintings due to their glossy finish and thick ink application.
