In Indian mythology, the gandharvas have been referred since 8th Century BCE, the period of the Mahābhārata. In Hinduism there are different believes and different stories about Gandharvas. The Bhagavata Purana says, during the creation Brahma laughed looking at the activities of some sexually active Asuras. Gandharvas are born from Brahma’s laughter. Gandharvas are celestial beings whose body is half human and other half of either of a bird or a horse. In the historic sense, Gandharvas have acted as messengers between the gods and humans.
The female versions are the Apsaras (Urvasi, Menaka & Ramba) the best dancers in the court of the gods. The male versions are the Ghandharvas, who are best singers and musicians. In fact because of their mastery over music, in the present days great classical singers sometimes are called Gandharvas.
In ancient India, There was even a marriage law in the name of Gandharvas. A Gandharva marriage is one contracted by mutual consent and without formal rituals. The belief of Gandharva is pretty common in other religions like Buddhism and Jainism too. But their look differs and are called kinara for male version and kinnari for female version. The term kinara may be they carry a musical instrument (lute) called kinara in their hands.
