About the Artist B.P. Banerjee;

Bamapada Banerjee (1851–1932) was a 19th-century painter from West Bengal, India. He gained recognition for his depictions of scenes from Hindu mythology, similar to other prominent painters of his time, such as Raja Ravi Varma, Vasudeo H. Pandya, and M. V. Dhurandhar. In addition to Hindu mythology, he also painted numerous portraits of Indian royals and European officials.

Bamapada Banerjee began his formal art education at the Calcutta Art School. However, dissatisfied with the school’s teaching methods, he left and sought private lessons from Pramathalal Mitra, who was likely a mentor offering a more personal and alternative approach to learning art.

Banerjee later worked as an apprentice to Karl Becker, a German painter residing in Calcutta at the time. Under Becker’s guidance, Banerjee would have learned valuable insights into European-style painting techniques.

In 1879, Banerjee’s work was recognized at an exhibition organized by the Society for the Promotion of Industrial Art, where he won a prize. This recognition marked an important milestone in his career and helped establish his reputation as a talented artist. Banerjee developed a unique artistic style that became highly influential. His works were widely reproduced, with most of these prints produced in Germany, further increasing his popularity. This oleograph print of [specific artwork] was also printed in Germany in early 1900s.
