The illustration depicts the Battle of Culloden, which took place near Inverness in Scotland. It portrays the shooting of injured Scots by troops from the army of the Duke of Cumberland, effectively ending the Jacobite rebellion on April 16, 1746, during the Jacobite Rising. This battle marked a significant turning point in Scottish Highland culture and history.

About the artist, Thomas Allom:

        Thomas Allom, a London-born architect, left his mark on iconic buildings like the Church of St. Peter's and parts of the stylish Ladbroke Estate in Notting Hill. Beginning as an apprentice to architect Francis Goodwin in 1819, he further refined his skills at the Royal Academy School, where his church designs gained recognition. However, it was his stunning illustrations that truly brought him fame. Allom's travels throughout the United Kingdom and Europe inspired him to create beautifully illustrated books such as "Westmorland, Cumberland, Durham and Northumberland Illustrated" and "Constantinople and the Scenery of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor." His artistic talent also graced books about Turkey, Italy, China, and Surrey.
