About the Artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir:

               Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a French Impressionist painter who was born on February 25, 1841, in Limoges, France. Renoir's family was poor, and he began working as a porcelain painter at the age of 13. In 1862, he moved to Paris to study art, and he quickly became friends with other artists who were experimenting with new styles of painting, including Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley.

About Auguste Renoir work:

                Renoir's early work was characterized by a bright and colorful style, and he became one of the leading figures of the Impressionist movement. He was particularly interested in capturing the effects of light and color on the human form, and his paintings often featured scenes of everyday life and landscapes.

Renoir's work was initially met with criticism from the art establishment, and he struggled to find commercial success. However, he eventually gained recognition and enjoyed a successful career as an artist, exhibiting his work in galleries and museums around the world.

Renoir died on December 3, 1919, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, at the age of 78. He left behind a large body of work, including more than 5,000 paintings, and he is considered one of the greatest painters of the Impressionist movement.

About Renoir’s painting By the Seashore:

            Renoir made a trip to Italy in 1881-82 and was deeply influenced by Renaissance art. After this trip he began to explore a new manner of painting, different from Impressionism. He started to emphasize contours and modeling, abandoned the principle that scenes should be painted outdoors to capture light and atmosphere.

Late in the summer of 1883, Renoir spent about a month in  St. Peter Port, the capital of Guernsey, and admired the rocks, cliffs and stunning view of Moulin Huet Bay in St. Martin.

By the Seashore proto-typically reflects this period in Renoir's art. He worked with small compositions in the field that he then pulled together in more elaborate, larger works while in his studio. He was also playing with the disparity of space and scale between figure and background at this time

About his model Aline Victorine Charigot:

           Aline Victorine Charigot (23 May 1859 – 27 June 1915) was a model for Renoir and later She became his wife while continuing to model for him and then caring for him when he became disabled.
