Bhairava holds particular significance in Nepal and northern India, where he's celebrated for beheading Brahma himself. According to legend, Bhairava manifested from Shiva's intense fury upon hearing Brahma's arrogant claims. In an instant, Bhairava emerged and severed one of Brahma's five heads, leading to Brahma being recognized thereafter with four heads instead of five.

The traditional breastplate, crafted from bronze and brass, features intricate details such as sculpted cobras. Snakes, symbolizing Shiva, are also associated with fertility. By embodying the divine form, Theyyam performers become vessels through which the voice and spirit of divinity manifest
