Description:     

A rare 19th-century teak temple panel from South India, circa 1870s, depicting Matsya, the fish avatar of Lord Vishnu, mounted on an iron stand, has been added to our Purathanam September Collection.

Matsya is the first of the Dashavatara, the ten principal avatars of Vishnu. In this form, Vishnu descended as a great fish to save Manu, the first man, from a great flood and to recover the sacred Vedas from the depths of the ocean.

The carving depicts the deity multi-armed and crowned, emerging from the fish form. The teak is deeply weathered, over 150 years of age visible in every grain.

A beautiful piece of history carrying both devotion and time within it.
