Description:

This is an embellished lithograph print of Ambika from the late 1800s  from the Ravi Varma press. Ravi Varma, an Indian artist renowned for his depictions in the Mahabharata and Ramayana, painted this beautiful piece.

In the mid-1800s, lithography gained popularity worldwide for its ease and versatility compared to earlier techniques like engraving and etching. Recognizing its high-quality results, it became a favored method for printing books, catalogs, and posters.

Initially, Raja Ravi Varma visited Germany for printing before establishing his own press in Bombay in 1894. Ambika, featured here, was lithographically produced in one of his Indian presses, founded in 1899 in Karla, Lonavla, Maharashtra.

What is Oleography?

The Greek word litho means 'stone' and graphein means 'to write' so Lithography can be defined as 'stone printing'. The printing plate originally used were porous stones. The priting portion of the stone plate was treated to absorb ink and the nonprinting area was treated to repel ink. Depending on the number of colours present, an oleograph could take months to produce by very skilled workers.
