Presenting an unique set of antique bookends crafted from a pair of brass Palanquin holders. Palanquins have a history dating back over 2,000 years, with stories and records from ancient times.

         A palanquin was a mode of transportation featuring a small cabin with comfortable bedding mounted on poles, which people in India used for an extended period. It typically required the coordination of two to four groups of bearers to carry.

         The term 'palanquin' originates from the Sanskrit word 'palanki,' which means 'bed' or 'couch.' Palanquins were widely used until the advent of trains and roads capable of accommodating other types of vehicles. As a result, the use of palanquins declined, and today, they are mainly seen at special events such as weddings.

The way these palanquins were decorated, and the finials on top, showed how important the person using them was. Also, whether they were for men or women made a difference. Women's palanquins usually had flowers like lotuses and birds, while men's had strong animals and creatures from old stories, literatures.
