Description:

Here is a unique Japanese lacquer art with Maki-e technique. This technique is the most used technique in Japanese lacquer decoration.

History of Japanese lacquer art:

Japanese lacquer art, also known as "urushi," has a long history dating back to ancient Japan. The art form involves coating wooden objects with the sap of the lacquer tree, and then decorating them with intricate designs.

During the Jomon period (14,000–300 BCE), Japanese people used lacquer to decorate their pottery. Later, in the Yayoi period (300 BCE–300 CE), they began to use it on wooden items.

In the Heian period (794-1185) lacquer art reached new heights of sophistication. The nobility in the capital city of Kyoto commissioned lacquerware for use in the imperial court.

In the Edo period (1603-1868), lacquer art continued to flourish, with new techniques and designs being developed. The rise of the merchant class led to a wider market for lacquerware, and many artisans began to specialize in specific types of lacquerware.

Today, lacquer art is still an important part of Japanese culture and continues to be appreciated both in Japan and internationally

About the Maki-e technique:

This technique is the most used technique in Japanese lacquer decoration. The maki-e is often combined with other techniques such as raden  in which a nacreous layer of shellfish is embedded or pasted in lacquer, zōgan in which metal or ivory is embedded in lacquer, and chinkin in which gold leaf or gold powder is embedded in a hollow where lacquer has been shaved.
