About the artist John Ramage;
Ramage, born in Dublin, Ireland, started as a goldsmith and miniaturist. He later moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, then Boston, painting popular ivory miniatures. In New York, he became renowned as the city's top artist. Martha Washington chose him to paint the first official portrait of her husband, George Washington, during his presidency, making Ramage the first artist to paint the 1st President of the United States in office.
