Unlike ordinary lithographs, oleographs were often finished with varnish or other surface treatments to give the image the appearance and texture of an oil painting. The technique made art more affordable and widely accessible, allowing images of gods, historical figures, landscapes and celebrated paintings to reach homes far beyond the original works. In India, oleographs played an especially important role in bringing devotional and popular imagery into everyday life, becoming an important part of the visual culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eIn late nineteenth-century India, the oleograph transformed the way people encountered art. These prints travelled into homes across the country and became part of everyday Indian visual culture.
